The installation of an energy efficient cooling solution and LED lighting system
Snapdragons Nurseries are a family run business and opened in January 1998 in a farmhouse in Atworth, Wiltshire in response to local demand for high-quality full day-care. It has developed an excellent local reputation and has since expanded into 9 sites across Bath, Bristol and other sites in Wiltshire.
As a company with a host of solutions, SMARTech Electrical Services is well-placed to provide the Snapdragon’s group of nurseries across the South West with electrical inspection & maintenance, electrical design & installation, lighting design & installation, energy monitoring and PAT testing. From the initial SMART Advisory Service, through to reports and installation strategy, SMARTech Electrical Services have identified key areas in which to improve both the comfort and learning environment for the children and staff at the nurseries.
Main challenges addressed by Snapdragons Nurseries
- Concerns of high energy bills
- Identify solar to off-set energy costs
- Investigate rain water storage solution
- Testing and inspection
- Address concerns raised by staff about summertime cooling in the toddler rooms
- Improve the nursery environment for children and staff
- SMARTech Electrical Services team to work out of hours to minimise disruption to the operational practices of the nurseries
Following concerns raised by the staff about Summertime cooling in the toddler rooms, an energy efficient cooling solution has been specified to tackle this issue.
The installation of a 3.1 DC Inverter (2.35kW) Powrmatic unit would be able to provide staff and toddlers with energy efficient high functionality cooling. This would create a more comfortable environmental for learning and play. Furthermore, the Powrmatic unit can also function as a heater should additional heating be required in the winter months.
The size of the building was considered in the installation. It’s types of use and the windows which identifies the heat loads in the building and thus the heating and cooling required. This system allows for an easy install with minimal disruption on day-to-day activities. The unit is installed directly onto a wall with an external outer edge with no need for intrusive works throughout ceiling voids and internal walls. There is no requirement for a condenser, saving costs on installation and reducing impact on the appearance of the building. All units can be controlled by a wifi app on a smartphone or tablet and set to the desired temperature.
An LED solution replaces the existing T8 2ft (600×600) fluorescent tube fittings with SMART LED panels – designed to give a great professional look. Many of the rooms will have a lower number of light fittings, considerably reducing the energy consumption of the site.
The 2D fittings across the site will be retrofitted with SMART LED plate and the outside 440-watt floodlights will be replaced with SMART Pro 50-watt LED floodlight with PIR, greatly reducing the nursery’s energy consumption.
From energy efficient LED lighting to more acutely optimised air conditioning systems, Snapdragon Nurseries are gaining the benefits of technologies designed to boost operational efficiencies and to reduce bills.
