SMARTech energy designs energising LED lighting for Olympiad Leisure Centre
Olympiad Leisure Centre in Chippenham is one of the largest leisure and activity centres in Wiltshire, offering first class health, sport and fitness facilities.
Sport and leisure centres inherently use more energy than most other operations and as part of a plan to reduce costs and become more environmentally friendly, SMARTech energy were asked to design an energy lighting solution for the centre’s gym.

HOW WE HELPED
Through the use of 3D design simulation, SMARTech energy’s consultancy team recommended the installation of LED lighting throughout the gym.
The LED solution replaced the gym’s existing T8 tube fluorescent fittings with SMART E-vapour 50 watts – designed with an excellent 115 lumen-watt efficiency and frosted lens to reduce glare. The designed lighting system was mounted above the gym equipment – as opposed to the existing wall mounted lights; thereby improving the output and overall uniformity of the light across the whole room.
The gym’s original lighting had an average ~80 lux across the area, however, the new design achieves an average 368-lux across the whole gym. This project will bring the lighting in the gym up to recommended standards and is an energy efficient upgrade in design rather than an energy saving measure.
SMARTech energy also included the retrofit of 5 x GU10 Halogen spotlights on the far side of the gym and the T8 5ft twin in the gym office with SMART LED replacements – reducing energy consumption and improving the light output.
Beneficial to staff and members, boosting motivation and productivity
The LED lighting supplied by SMARTech energy is a superb example of improved lighting quality – which is flicker free, provides constant brightness and adheres to CIBSE recommendations.
The use of LED lighting was shown to create an energising, high-intensity ambience – which not only replicates natural daylight, but creates a bright space for gym users to enjoy their fitness experience.
The results from this installation has proved hugely beneficial to staff and members, boosting motivation and productivity.
SMARTech energy’s videographer and Energy Consultant, Carl Wood captured the installation and the video can be viewed on our website here.
